Genocide The United Nations Security Council Essay

Acts of genocide have occurred for centuries even though the term genocide did not appear until the twentieth century. In 1948 the United Nations General Assembly passed a law that legally defined genocide and ruled it as an illegal act. According to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CPPCG) Article II the definition of genocide is â€Å"any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: ââ€"  Killing members of the group; ââ€"  Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; ââ€"  Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; ââ€"  Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; ââ€"  Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group† (Chaulagain). Even with this very clear definition of genocide the United Nations Security Council still proved ineffective in preventing the genocide that occurred in Rwanda between the Hutu and Tutsi people. There are a number of theories as to why the U.N. was so inefficient in preventing the genocide such as : there was little political will to intervene from Western countries, the tragedy which had recently occurred in Somalia, and the overlooking of early warning signs. Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa Today, both anorexia and bulimia are the most common eating disorders and affect almost 15 percent of American teenagers. Eating disorders are fifteen times more likely to occur in adolescent girls than adolescent boys. They can be fatal and thousands die from every year but this is one mental illness that can be beaten. Anorexia is increasing more rapidly in developed countries than in underdeveloped countries. Bulimia is becoming the more common type of eating disorder among teens. It is difficult to diagnose because many bulimics are deeply ashamed of their rituals and few share their problems with close friends (4). Unfortunately, even when saying this he was part of the beginning of one of the first parties in United States politics. There have been many different parties surface since the beginning of the American political system. They all have different thoughts, policies, and motivations. Each party has come and gone, some have made significant contributions and others have not. The first split, and beginning of the party system, came with the differentiation between the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans. These two parties were extremely different in thought, design, and status of people involved. This paper, will deal with what these differences were, and whom each party consisted of. I will start by explaining some about who the Federalists were, then I will describe the Democratic Republicans, and finally I will summarize some of the contrasts between the two. The Federalists were a powerful and wealthy party. Mostly lawyers, big businessmen, bankers, merchants, and professionals made up the Federalist Party. The Federalists had a lot of money and were mostly influential in New England and the North part of the United States because big business was very popular there. The Federalist Party consisted of people who were very much Anglophiles. They loved Britain and all things British. The Federalists felt that there should be a loose constructionist interpretation of the constitution. They believed that there were things implied by or simply understood by the wording of the Constitution. According to the Federalists, just because something was not specifically written in the Constitution doesn’t mean that it wasn’t covered or addressed as something that the federal government could handle. The Federalist Party also supported a strong governmental leadership. They thought that the most important branch of government was the executive branch, and that a strong leader was needed in this office of president to make the country strong. Some important Federalist Party supporters included George Washington, John Adams, John Jay, and Alexander Hamilton. There were some people who didn’t agree with everything that the Federalist Party believed. This new party was known as the Democratic Republicans. This party was made up of farmers, small businessmen, and laborers. The Democratic Republicans weren’t backed by as much money, and were considerably poorer than the Federalists. The south and west parts of the United States were most influenced by the Democratic Republicans because that is were the majority of the farming population was located. These people were not very enamored by Britain or British things and were thought of as Anglophobes. The Democratic Republicans adopted a strict constructionist view of the interpretation of the Constitution. Their party felt that if an issue wasn’t written or referred to directly in the Constitution, that the federal government had no place regulating or handling those issues. The party of Democratic Republicans wanted a strong democratic government, and therefore very much supported a strong legislature that would create laws to govern the people. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were some very influential Democratic Republicans. As you can see, there were many differences between the Federalist and Democratic Republican Parties. One party was wealthy, the other poor. Each party had control over a particular part of the nation. They each had their own idea as to how to interpret the Constitution. This split between parties was just the beginning of the American political party system. There have been many different parties come alive since this split and will likely be more to come in the future. Chillingworth is hinting that the medicine he is giving Dimmesdale is nature’s way of making sure Dimmesdale is getting the punishment he deserves. Roger’s sin here is that he is one with the devil and carrying out actions only the devil would use through the â€Å"black medicine†. Once he stopped partaking the herbs given by Chillingworth, unfortunately, Dimmesdale died. This is proof Chillingworth used the herbs to stall Dimmesdale’s untimely death. At their home, Chillingworth offered Dimmesdale medicine. â€Å"But methinks, dear Sir, you look pale; as if the travel through the wilderness had been too sore for you. Will not my aid be requisite to put you in heart and strength to preach your Election Sermon? Dimmesdale passed on the medicine, knowing Chillingworth’s intentions. Chillingworth was described as being a â€Å"leech† and feed off of Dimmesdale’s pain, but when he collapsed and died on the scaffold the next day, he had nothing left to live for and died soon after. It is not a coincidence that Dimmesdale died so soon after being clean of herbs. Death was not a part of Chilli ngworth’s plan, and Dimmesdale was able to escape Chillingworth’s torture by stopping his medications and dying. Roger Chillingworth is the worst sinner in The Scarlet Letter. He prolonged Dimmesdale’s torture through herbs and was one with the devil. Roger Chillingworth never laid a hand on Dimmesdale throughout the book but he mentally got to him over the seven years. The herbs kept Dimmesdale alive just so Roger could get his revenge through the torture. When Dimmesdale passed away after stopping the herbs Roger Chillingworth had nothing left to live for, and died shortly after, because as the â€Å"leech†, he no longer had anything to feed off of. Roger Chillingworth was not always the man that he seemed, he had something deeper in him and was the worst sinner.

While you can receive giardia through food, it is more commonly known as more of water borne parasite. Although I did find a real life giardia outbreak that had occurred in New Hampshire year 2007. This incident involved thirty one residents of a very tiny community. The reason why giardia had occurred was due to extremely poor placement of a well. Wells are supposed to be fifteen miles under the ground and this particular well was twelve point five miles under the ground. It may not seem like much of a difference but there are reasons for procedures and regulations. Because someone wanted to cut corners thirty one people had to get very sick and suffer. This was the biggest outbreak of giardia within a community. 4. What are the clinical symptoms, duration of the disease and treatment if any? Clinical symptoms can occur up to two days after giardia has infected you. Giardia, can consist of an over excess of gas, violent diarrhea, nausea, upset stomach, stomach and or abdominal cramps. The first two days you have violent diarrhea, as the infection progresses many people tend to then be constipated for a week or so after along with the very painful production of gas as well as severe stomach and abdominal pain. Giardia can be resolved without treatment. On the other hand there is medication that contains metronidazole and tinidazole, decreases symptoms of giardia. Another thing that can be used is an anti-worm medication. I would assume that it would kill more parasites than worms. 5. What steps can be taken to prevent future out breaks? Include individual as well as environmental precautions and methods. There are many things that can be done to prevent giardia. Most of the things mainly all revolve around very poor hygiene. Ensuring that you are clean is one of the best ways you can avoid giardia. It is always very important to make sure that you wash your hands, especially before touching your face, and mouth. I personally refuse to touch many public surfaces and objects; I always have hand sanitizer on my person. For the environmental part of the question I feel that one of the biggest problems that causes giardia in communities is surface what that is not properly being treated. Out breaks within a community is no fun at all. In my opinion I feel that if everyone were more cautious about their hygiene then maybe there would be very little to no out breaks.

Frederick Douglass In the early 1840’s, Frederick Douglass wrote an autobiography of his life as a slave. His abhorrence of slavery stemmed from two fronts. The first was the reprehensible treatment and dehumanization of the African-American slave. The second was the corrupting influence the power of slavery had upon the slaveholder. â€Å"But, alas! this kind heart [of his mistress] had but a short time to remain such. The fatal poison of irresponsible power was already in her hands, and soon commenced it’s infernal work† (2). In chapters 6-8, Douglass makes one particular point, among many, quite clear: unjust laws corrupt honorable souls and make criminals of law-abiding people. Douglass relates his experience of learning the alphabet from his mistress and the subsequent cessation of this study by his master. Due to his master’s explanation of why his mistress shouldn’t teach him, a slave, to read, Douglass realizes exactly where white society gets its power to enslave black society. That is â€Å"†¦education and slavery were incompatible†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (3 & 6). Upon the heels of this revelation is a second: the pathway from slavery to freedom lies in learning to read (3). The basic injustice of keeping an entire race in mental ignorance for the soul purpose of exploiting them as a work force is one of Douglass’ main criticisms. Douglass conveys to his readers the drastic change that took place in his mistress due to the heady power of having absolute control over another person’s life. She changed from a kind, warm, hard-working soul to a tyrant under slavery’s tutelage (5). Creativity In The Early Years Creativity in an early years setting is difficult to define, although definitions have been provided on the basis of the attempting to define the process of creativity, the product of a persons creativity or the personal attributes that contribute to creativity. Creativity has, for example, been defined as, a novel and appropriate response to an open-ended task (Amabile and Hennessey, 1992) or as very much a processà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦often with no clearly identifiable outcomes or productà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦(allowing children the scope) to explore new possibilities and create new and exciting connections between people, places and thingsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦to discover meanings in their world (Department for Children, School and Families, 2007). I believe, from my personal point of view, that creativity is actually a mixture of all three of these perspectives: people who have certain attributes are more likely to be able to think, and respond, creatively to certain situations and tasks, via certain processes than people who lack these attributes. Creativity, however, is more than the possession of certain attributes and is certainly not linked to intelligence: it is a factor that individuals can bring to all aspects of their lives, in terms of solving problems in all aspects of their lives in terms of approaching tasks in a creative manner in order to find creative solutions to these tasks, be these artistic endeavors or tasks related to music, mathematics or science. As the Department for Children, School and Families (2007) explain, creativity can transform understanding by fostering critical thinking, allowing children to review, reinvent and make new meanings for themselves. Creativity thus understood defines all aspects of a childs school life, not only traditionally artistic endeavors but also all other disciplines such as mathematics and the sciences: creatively thinking about numbers, for example, can lead children to understand the beauty of mathematics and the fascinating world of physics, which can open their minds to new worlds and new possibilities. Teaching mathematics by rote, seeking only the right answers to set questions will only lead children to hate mathematics classes and to view mathematics as an abstracted idea that is not useful to them, practically, in their lives. Creativity, in this sense, then, can be fostered by encouraging children to explore their surroundings, allowing them to seek their own questions about their surroundings and helping them to arrive at interesting answers for their questions, where interesting answers can be understood as answers that will satisfy them and lead them to further questions. Guiding childrens learning in this manner can encourage creative thinking, giving power to childrens ideas and thoughts, allowing them to creatively solve problems. Allowing children to enjoy the process of thinking, of learning, of researching, can embody creativity in them, in terms of allowing them to develop their own creative responses to their learning experiences and their own creative ways of understanding the world around them. As Amabile and Hennessey (1992) argue, people will be most creative when they feel motivated primarily by the interest, enjoyment, satisfaction and challenges of the work itself rather than by external pressures with such self-directed motivation leading to higher incidences of creativity and self-determined competence. Self-determination, as Amabile and Hennessey (1992) argue, is central to the development of meaningful creativity, i.e., creative thinking that can have real meaning in the lives of children, allowing them to produce creative solutions to all problems they encounter. Creativity can only be fostered, and used in practice to develop meaningful ways of thinking, when three components are present: domain-relevant skills (such as knowledge, experience and talent in a particular domain); creativity-relevant skills (such as independent, flexible, risk-oriented thinking); and task motivation (with intrinsic, not extrinsic motivation being more likely to lead to creative thin king) (Amabile and Hennessey, 1992). As Duffy (2006) argues, the promotion of open-ended thinking, via the use of open-ended activities, can encourage creativity in young children, encouraging the development of creative solutions via experimentation, exploration, discovery and invention. This encouragement of open-ended thinking, argues Duffy (2006) makes learning more meaningful to young children, allowing them, as it does, the scope to develop their own thoughts about themselves, their environment and their relationships, allowing them to develop their own creative responses to the questions that arise for them, from this understanding. Creativity can, thus, argues Duffy (2006) be encouraged and can, through this encouragement, be learned, with its ramifications, as Craft (2002) argues, being lifewide, equipping young children with the tools they need to develop and maintain a positive, open-minded approach to learning. As Prentice (2000) argues, it can be difficult, within the structure of early years education, with its curriculum and its goals that have to be attained, to encourage such creative thinking, in terms of not having the space to foster the conditions most likely to promote creative thought and action. In my experience, classrooms are often not conducive to the fostering of creative thinking, rather being geared towards the attainment of curriculum goals, and right answer dominated thinking, i.e., teaching, and learning, aimed solely at getting the right answer, not at teaching, or, rather, engendering, creative thinking processes. My personal view of the topic is that creativity is a fundamentally important skill to teach to young children in an early years setting, in terms of equipping children with the tools they need to approach all of their subsequent learning and to move in to the world, in order to deal, not only with their academic work, but with all the situations that their life might present to them. Creative thinking, the creative invention of solutions to problems, can better help children to face not only their academic work but also their lives, allowing them to deal creatively with problems they might encounter, equipping them with the tools they need to move positively through their lives. Conclusion Creativity is fundamentally important in the early years setting, equipping children with a whole way of viewing, exploring and understanding their world, allowing them to explore new possibilities in the ways in which they learn. The importance of creativity in the early years setting cannot be underestimated and, in my personal view, more should be done to foster creativity in young children. Although the Early Years Foundation curriculum highlights that childrens creativity must be extended by the provision of support for their curiosity, exploration and playà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦and (children) must be provided with opportunities to explore and share their thoughts, creativity, ideas and feelings (Department for Children, Schools and Families, 2009), recent research, as highlighted in this essay has shown that the forging lifelong, lifewide, creativity in children is a more intrinsic, more involved, more holistic process than simply providing children the opportunity to learn through pla y.

Phobias and Addictions through Classical and Operant Conditioning This paper will explore how phobias and addictions are formed through both classical and operant conditioning and show just as addictions and phobias can be formed, they can also become extinct. Classical conditioning is the use of a conditional stimulus such as a person, place or object that forms an unconditional response. An unconditional response is one that does not require thought, but instead, is a natural reaction of the body (Kowalski & Weston, 2010). Irrational fear of an object or a situation is called a phobia. Phobia’s can make a person become paralyzed with fear for no apparent reason. Phobia’s can be created by putting together an object or a situation with an irrational thought or feeling. Singularly, the object or situation does not provoke a fearful reaction, put once a fearful, irrational thought is associated with the stimulus, the object or the situation creates a fearful response. Phobia’s can be created by classical conditioning. This happe ns when a stimulus is repeatedly paired with a negative reaction. Over time, the brain begins to associate the stimulus with the negative reaction and creates a fight or flight response. Take for example agoraphobia, the fear of being in certain places such as crowds, public transportation or being outside their home without another person. At some point, while doing one of these activities, the individual probably had a panic attack. In his or hers mind, the association between the place and the panic attack has started to take hold. The next time the individual returns to the place or activity, he or she may become worried that he or she will again have a panic attack. The stress from the worry may then elicit another panic attack, which then conditions the brain to have the same fearful reaction to the stimulus. The individual then becomes extremely stressed when faced with the stimulus, or he or she avoids the place or activity completely. This is how agoraphobia is created through classical conditioning. Operant conditioning is a reinforcement of behavior that is controlled by the environment rather than then being a natural  reaction of the body (Kowalski & W eston, 2010). When an individual avoids a situation or an activity because of even the slightest fear, this reinforces the effects and the intensity of the fear. It can become a phobia through operant conditioning. A phobia created by operant conditioning takes place when the negative reaction to the stimulus is reinforced by the avoidance of that stimulus. Over time, the negativity escalates and the individual will have a much harder time dealing with and overcoming his or her fear. While classical and operant conditioning can create phobias, they can also cause addictions. According to the book â€Å"Addictions: A Comprehensive Guidebook† (McCrady & Epstein, 1999) classically conditioned addictions are created when the mind begins to associate a person place or object to the stimulus of the addiction such as shopping, drugs or food. These associations then begin to have a trigger effect and that causes the cravings or urges for the stimulus. With operant conditioning, a person is conditioned to use his or her stimulus of choice because of the feelings or emotions that are aroused due to the use of the individual’s stimulus. These feelings are a positive reinforcement of his or hers behavior directly related to the use of that person’s â€Å"drug† of choice. In the case of an individual who is addicted to food, if he or she is feeling upset or anxious, they may choose to binge on food and in the moment, start to feel less anxious or less irritable. These feelings are a positive reinforcement of their choice to binge. Thus they are conditioning themselves to feel better through the use of food bingeing. This is operant conditioning. Just as classical and operant behaviors are able to take hold, they can also become extinct. In the case of phobia’s or addiction’s, the classical conditioning extinction process starts to take place when the body’s natural reaction, i.e. panic attacks or cravings, start to take place without the person, place or object being posed. Eventually the mind starts to disassociate the original stimulus and the response, leading to the extinction of the classically conditioned behavior. Much in the same way as classical conditioning becomes extinct; operant conditioning begins the extinction process when the reinforcement of the behavior no longer takes place. For the binge eater, if they no longer are comforted by the food, the food starts to become less effectual as a means to control feelings  bringing about the extinction of the addiction (Kowalski & Weston, 2010). I will explore the different methods and techniques used by the poet to convey the story and event. I am going to compare, The Affliction of Margaret, On my first Sonne, Mid-Term Break and Cold Knap Lake. In The Affliction of Margaret, the tone is set almost immediately, because the reader is asked a question, Where art thou, my beloved Son this is the first line of the poem and it suggest that the character has lost her son, because she is questioning where art thou, from this we see that the poem is based on a mother and son theme. Where art thou, worse to me than dead? here the poet questions the audience, by using a rhetorical question, this technique involves the read more emotionally. The quotation shows that her son is missing, and the idea that it is on the same level of being dead, if not worse because having your child missing, creates a false hope that they will return, whereas knowing they are dead, will allow you to come to terms with it, and your mind will be at peace even though there has been a indescribable loss. The length of this poem supports the theme of the poem, because there are 11 stanzas which are fairly long. Each stanza in this poem has a different tone on the same theme, an example of this is in the second stanza, there is a tone of being tricked and miserable, whereas in the third stanza, Margaret begins to praise her son Ingenuous, innocent, and bold. in the sixth stanza there is a feeling that she may have accepted her son is gone, because she is almost writing a letter to her child, saying how she should be thought of think not of me with grief and pain. On my first Sonne is similar to The Affliction of Margaret because they are both about children, but this is different because the boy has died, and is not missing. Knowing your child is dead removes all the thoughts and questions running through the mind of the parent. There is no chance that the child will return so it also removes any hopes, where as having your child missing, creates a hope that they will return, or several scenarios are created such as Whats happened to my son?, all the bad things that may of happened. All these negative images develop in the mind, when thinking about a loved one that has gone missing. In On my first Sonne contains several methods to explain the event that has happened, Farewell, thou child of my right hand this tells the reader that he has already lost a child. This poem is fairly emotional and plays with the concept of death. Jonson refers to his son as a sin my sinne was too much hope of thee this shows that Jonson has accepted the death of his son. Seven yeeres thowert lent to me, and I thee pay this shows that Jonson feels that his son was lent to him from God, and his death was just him returning to where he belonged and his death was meant to be. The tone of this poem is much more subtle and peaceful; it is based on how his son was a blessing etc, whereas in The Affliction of Margaret the tone and theme are unsettled and static, because there is a sense of anxiety and distress, because the boy is missing. Ben Jonson sees his son as a piece his best piece of work his best piece of poetrie. Due to his death, Jonson may never enjoy his life again for the fear that he might loose his loved ones as what he loves may never like too much. This is the last line of the poem and suggests the end, because he said he will never be too happy again. So the peak of his life has passed, the poem seems to suggest that Jonson is jealous of his son, and wishes for death so they can be together. The techniques in this poem create a sense of peace and justice, because Ben Jonson is talking about how his son is a blessing and linking him to God. The event of the death of his son is told in a very positive and poetic way. The poem flows smoothly, and contains rhyming couplets; on the other hand in The Affliction of Margaret the event is reflected in a negative way. I have no other earthly friend this is the last line of the poem and shows the depression and sadness in Margaret, she feels alone and isolated from the world, because her son was more then a son but also a best friend, so she has lost more then just a son. In mid-term break, the tone of the poem is set in the second line of the first stanza. Counting bells knelling classes to a close here Heaney uses alliteration, this emphasizes the sounds of the bells at the funereal. The first stanza begins with morning I sat all morning and only two lines away At two oclock this shows how hours have been spent waiting. In all four poems there is a sense of death, and the poets are all telling a past event, in The Affliction of Margaret its about her missing son, and all her problems, and her unsettled mind, in On my first Sonne, there is a sense of peace and the rush and uncertainty in The Affliction of Margaret is not there, because Ben Jonson has accept the death of his death, and has justified it, by seeing his son more as a blessing, then a person. Mid-term break is also based on the same theme of death, because it is about a funeral, and the effects is has caused, and in Cold Knap lake, the event is the discovery of a dead girl that is brought back to life. Being Young in Hackney

The best thing about being young in Hackney is that there are so many different places to go to and explore in the borough, such as libraries, parks, museums, cinemas, farms and more. These places give people somewhere to go during their free time or on the weekends when they're not busy, that are close to their homes. The Hackney Library, located in the heart of Hackney, provides a place for young people to have access to computers and internet, read quietly or just to hang out with their friends. There is a large selection of books to read, from children's colourful picture books to adult drama novels. The library is divided into a children's section and an adult section. The adult section is much quieter than the children's section, everyone concentrates on their own book. There's a news stand with all the current stories to keep us up to date with what's been going on around the world. There is also an entertainment section where you can rent films and CDs. The children's section is much louder. There are several computers so children can play games, finish homework or just to instant message their friends online. Quite a lot of people go to the library after school. Hackney is one of the greenest boroughs in London. There are many parks in the borough including London Fields, Springfield Park and Victoria Park. People go to parks for jogs, walking their dogs, picnics or just to get some fresh air. Parks are places where young people go to hang out with their friends and play on the swings and slides. Parks are also a great places to meet new people and socialize with them. Sometimes there may be events at the parks. There are many organisms inhabiting the green areas, for example birds, squirrels, and insects. The trees in the parks give out oxygen. There is also Hackney Empire, located in Mare street. People go to the theatre for entertainment, they enjoy watching all the performances. Hackney City Farm is a local farm in Shoreditch. The farm brings the countryside to the inner-city community. Entry to the farm is free. There is a whole range of farm animals pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, rabbits, guinea pigs and other animals. Animal produce is sold including milk, eggs and yarn. The farm brings country life to urban people. There is also a large garden where you can help plant and grow things.The farm is a good place for families and schools to visit. The cinema is a place for watching films on a big scrren. Young people and families enjoy going to the cinema. During the weekends young people go with their friends to watch a film, it is a place for them to go when they have free time. People want loud music and laughter for entertainment. Some people prefer to stay at home and watch television instead. There is only one cinema in Hackney, Rio in Dalston. Markets in Hackney are usually crowded and exciting. I started tenuously; I had no idea how effective an online degree program would be for me but I was willing to go the distance. Before long I was hooked. I absolutely loved the flexibility of the program and was so happy that I was able to earn my degree without compromising the rest of my life. I earned my online IT degree and I was off and running from there, even earning an online MBA. A few years went by and I decided that I wanted to change careers and pursue a job in teaching – something that I had always loved. I was back online getting all of my classes under my belt and I even went so far as to get a Masters in Education. I know; it’s crazy. But there’s something so self-satisfying about putting my mind to something and getting it done in my time.
